Exercise – Primary and secondary colours

For this exercise I was advised to find scenes or parts of scenes that are each dominated by a single one of the primary and secondary colours.

Primary –

  • Red
  • Blue
  • Yellow

Secondary –

  • Orange
  • Green
  • Purple

I was to take 18 photographs and with each colour that i found, to vary the exposure slightly. One to be as the meter reading correctly indicates and the other two as half a stop under exposed and half a stop over exposed. I was advised to take my time and try and avoid photographing paint (which meant, find natural objects to shoot)

I chose to photograph fruit and vegetables as i thought the natural colours matched the colour chart well, (this being the point of the exercise – to be able to develop and refine my colour sense). However, during the shoot, I found that by only under/over exposing the subjects by half a stop didn’t make much difference to the colour shades. I have therefore used the f stops – f4, f6.5 + f8 with f6.5 being at the correct exposure. By doing this most of the shutter speeds are different. However, I thought the examples of the colour difference took priority in this instance. My images below have not been edited at all, as i wanted to show the true colours and compare them with the colour wheel.

The exercise advises to note which shot is the closest when comparing with the colour wheel, in this case i think it would be the over exposed image at f4.

  • Blue

(f6.5)
