Exercise – Focal lengths

Project Focal lengths

Exercise – Focal lengths (Zoom lens)

This exercise has helped me to appreciate the simplest effect of changing lenses, from one focal length to another, which is the amount of view i can take in. I needed to find a view which was open and had some detail in the distance, see my choice below of the estuary where i live, which i thought would be perfect and show the results very clearly. I have taken a a sequence of photographs all aimed in the same direction but with different focal lengths.

The images below were taken at 1/400 f22

24mm lens – telephoto

50mm lens – standard/normal

105mm lens – wide angle

From my shots above we can see that as the focal length gets longer, the angle of view closes in.
